How You Can Risk or Slow Down Your Insurance Claim

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has reported that the most likely type of insurance claim to be rejected is home insurance. To put this into context, 79% of home insurance claims are successful compared to 99% of motor insurance claims and 87% of travel insurance claims that pay out.

Buildings and contents insurance policies are generally policies of indemnity.  In theory this should put the policyholder’s property back to how things were before the loss or damage occurred. However there are many hurdles to overcome before you can reach a fair settlement.

Insurance claims are full of technical detail and depending on the claim event, timeframes for processing claims can vary. Whilst you will want your claim to be processed and settled as swiftly as possible, there are a few things that you can do, and NOT do, to support a quicker claims process and to secure the fairest settlement.

  1. DO NOT clean up any damage, before your insurance company has seen the full extent of the damage to the building and its contents. A full list of ALL items should be taken before you clean up, fix or replace anything.
  2. DO take photographs. The policy you have with your insurance company is similar to a contract.  The damage at your property should be treated as evidence and as such, it should be used to help you recover the FULL value of these items which have been damaged.
  3. DO NOT throw anything out until you have the approval of your insurance company.
  4. DO hire a specialist loss assessor, like Gullion Ltd. Once notified, your insurance company will appoint a Loss Adjuster to investigate the claim. The Loss Adjuster is paid a fee by the insurance company to handle the claim and will therefore look after their own interests in an attempt to pay out as little as possible.  With more than one in five home insurance claims rejected by insurers every year, appointing an expert Loss Assessor, like Gullion Ltd, can help secure your full entitlement, under the terms and conditions of your policy.  Appointing Gullion Ltd will also take the hassle, wasted time and stress out of the entire process as we will manage all aspects of your claim, keeping you updated every step of the way.
